In August, ݮƵ College of Art and Design readily received Dr. Elcin Haskollar, Ph.D. as the new Dean of Students for Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Haskollar is an award-ݮƵ higher education leader, whose past experiences include providing strategic direction to student affairs offices, programs, and services on the foundations of cross-cultural understanding, and strategizing and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion-focused initiatives for institutions of higher education.

In past roles, she designed DEI educational ݮƵ for faculty and staff, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. She has trained others at Florida State University, Defiance College, Arizona State University, Florida Institute of Technology, and Thomas University, as well as organizations like AmeriCorps and Rotary International. At FSU, she received an institutional grant to host and co-produce the University’s first DEI podcast, The Diversity Talks.

Haskollar has published work on the topic of intercultural competence in several journals and books, including the article, “Do Demographics Matter? The Relationship between Student Characteristics and Intercultural Competence,” in the Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, from earlier this year. She has presented at various professional workshops on international and DEI-related issues in the United States, Canada, Argentina, China, and Turkey. She speaks three languages, formally studied five, and has lived in five different countries.

As the Director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Haskollar will bring her innovative approach and creativity to the College, including a new podcast slated to launch Feb. 2024. On the topic of her new role and future plans, she shared:

“I am thrilled to be joining the ݮƵ College community. The College has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. As we are building on this commitment, I am excited to engage the full spectrum of diversity among students, faculty, and staff and tackle social justice issues through the power of art and design.”

The mission of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion is to cultivate an engaged campus climate founded on care and respect that provides all members of the college community with access, opportunity, representation, equity, and a sense of belonging. We believe that art and design exist and thrive through diversity. Our multicultural student body comes from 60 countries and nearly every U.S. state, and all are welcome here.
